Silk Road from June 2017 starting Tbilisi

Hi,

I will be cycling the Silk Road from mid June 2017 starting in Tbilisi, Georgia, and going via the Caspian Sea ferry to Aktau, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan (Pamir Highway), Kyrgyzstan and on to Kashgar, China.

It would be great to hear from people who are considering such a route around the same time - I am on a recruitment drive! So do get in touch.

- Josephine

Silk Road Trip

I can't tell from your bio what country you are from. Iran just announced a few minutes ago that they are no longer going to allow Americans access to Iran. ...I'd say stay away. Politics are getting worse there.

Hey Jack

Hey Jack
I am wondering where politics are getting worse these days... in the US or Iran.
I can't blame Iran to not let Americans in after your President just banned Iranians and other nationals from his country.
Iran is a wonderful and welcoming country for travelling, try to get a fresh (US-independent) opinion of this country.

My response had to do with the rider's safety and had absolutely nothing to do with American relations with Iran or making political statements.

Hi Jack & Daniel - thanks for

Hi Jack & Daniel - thanks for the comments. I get the worry (it's always an uncertain place) though also get Daniel as I have heard lots about the hospitality of people there. I've got EU and Swiss passports so should be fine, fingers crossed...!

Hey Josephine! I'll also be doing the Silk Road but a couple months behind you (August). Will be starting in Estonia and making my way to China.

I'd like to keep in touch with you if you have any advice, warning, etc! Good luck on your journey!

silk road

Good luck with your ride Josephine, I cycled the silk road last year but went via kazakhstan/ Uzbeck/Tajik/Kryrg. because I couldn't get an Iranian visa. Be prepared for ridiculous temperatures along the way, sometimes it got up to 55 degrees, so my advise is to ride in the very early hours and break at noon. Also the roads are dreadful so buy yourself some Schwalbe Marathon Mondials, bomb proof tyres. Im in Canada now about to fly to portugal to ride home to England after 15 months on the road. Good luck!!

What do you do in kashgar?

Hi Josephine
Good luck!
Am looking at this same route as i'm from the UK and its not possible now to cycle independently in Iran
Won't start til August in Georgia
2 quick questions -
What will you do in kashgar - fly out or join a tour? Can you cycle independently in China?
Are you doing this route as a single female and how do you feel about it? I've just done Germany France Italy solo and taken a boat to Greece. I'm doing fine but feel nervous about going off the beaten track alone - would love to hear from another solo female on your perspective!
:) Cathy

Hi Cathy,

been not a female cyclist but can tell you that it wouldn`t be a problem for you to cycle independently.

Of course it`s not a problem to cycle China. Don`t tell it the administration if you extend your visa.
The dates of the uzbek and tajik visa is fixed as you have to be plan seriously.

Don`t miss the Pamir Highway. Indredible hard but worth every drop of sweat.
