ACA Southern Tier Feb. 2018 W to E (There and back again)

Hi everyone, I know it's still 6 months away, but with all the logistics involved, I figured, I might as well get a jump on it. :)

So....... Where to start..

OH! Hi, my name is Rick, I'm a 50 year old omnivore, from Las Vegas Nevada, I like to indulge in non-cycling interests, such as beer, burgers, etc, ( Think fat man on a bike, but with the legs to go the distance) and I will be heading out on a "modified" US Southern tier route. By modified, I only mean that I would hook up with a companion in Phoenix, (Or Las Vegas if you choose to start from here also), rather than in San Diego, other than that, the route would be pretty vanilla ACA.  (See my update further down the page) Start time for this tour would be ~ Feb 15, or so, depending on conditions. I recently sold off my old Fuji touring bike & gear, and am running all new gear & bike foo this tour, so I'm expecting something to break. :D My preferences in a touring companion are pretty simple. Have a good attitude, a sense of humor, sense of adventure, and understanding that I am 50, trying to push a steel bike across those mountains. ;) Male, Female, Straight, bi, gay, doesn't matter to me, we're all humans. Oh and if you happen to enjoy an unsupported, no SAG support, no hotel, (WS hosts are ALWAYS a welcome sight), oh, and killer music, type of tour, we should get along swimmingly.

I've learned in my 50 years, that life is too damned short for prejudices, hate, politics, & religion. Everyone is, who they are, and believe what they believe, and I am in no position to try to change anyones mind about anything, and prefer to avoid those areas of unavoidable conflict, when touring (i.e go along to get along). Plus a little weed along the way never hurts.. O_o.

As I have the "luxury"/freedom to take my time at this point in my life, I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere, BUT I don't have any desire for it to take any longer than reasonably possible. 40 - 70 miles per day, at a decent ( for the load I carry ) 10 - 15mph depending on terrain & conditions. I am a technology nut, so technically I will be the personification of a "Fred". Lights, music, solar power to charge everything, I can't fully unplug, not even for a tour. :)

My wife thinks I'm crazy for doing an unsupported tour, but I classify it as my mid-life crisis / finding my spirit animal, tour. :) If my profile sparks interest, and you think we might be a good match, as the kids say "Hit me up", and I'll forward my contact info, if I've offended you in any way, well, HTFU sunshine.

I Thank you for reading my babble. P.S. Yes, that's a full rack on the front, never know when I might strap a pizza on it for later. :) P.P.S. Setting up WS hosts ahead of time would be (as the kids say) AWESOME / KILLER / RAD.. :D Cheers, Rick

usa southern tier 2018

Hi there Rick.....Just doing some surfing on w/showers website when I saw your post. I am at the moment in the "research phase" of my trip along the southern tier...[ST]. I have the ACA maps [borrowed from a friend] and had planned setting off around the middle of Feb. like yourself but from San Diego.[open to change]. I was also thinking of doing a couple of weeks in Cuba at the end but have since changed my mind.
I sometimes ride solo but have linked up with my son a few times and also with Serge my friend from France from whom I am awaiting a decision to do the ST....I have given him details but not sure he really wants to go though we are great friends...he's got a fantastic sense of humour not unlike myself. Is 3 a crowd should he decide to come? or we could meet up on the way across.
Anyway, check out my profile on warmshowers for an idea of what sort of guy I am. Or google Bob Johnston, Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK for my f/bk. Whatever your decision we can always share information.
Best Wishes from England. Bob J. a very young enthusiastic 72 year old who still does triathlons to a good standard.

Southern Tier 2018 - Tour Update

Hi everyone.

Well, the tour is still on for Feb 15th 2018, but with a few minor changes.

I will no longer be departing from Las Vegas, instead I will be departing from the traditional starting location in San Diego, Ca.

I am still looking for riding companions, so if you might be interested, pop me a message.

Rick

P.S. The full tour route, is shown below..

Upcoming Tour

Hello Rick, I might be interested in doing part of the Texas route if I can fit it into my crazy schedule. I've already done the El Paso to just west of San Antonio part (awesome BTW) so might be interested in joining the part through the TX hill country to east Texas. Even a few days. Have lots of cycling friends along that route portion. Anyway keep me in mind and send me updates as you tour gets closer.

I have a couple journals on crazy guy on a bike and have hosted pretty much everyone that ends up going into and out of Mexico via deep south Texas.

Hi Richard,

Hi Richard,

I Would be hjappy to have you along, for as long as you like. I know Texas is the long haul part of the trip, so added company would be great.

I've got your info in my phone now, and will send you an email or a call, when I get close to your area.

Cheers,

Rick

I'm a Warm Showers host

I'm a Warm Showers host between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. When you are near give me a shout. I am very busy with work but depending on when you get to Louisiana I may be able to join in and get some riding with you and whomever else you have. If you need a host site here it will be available.

Hi Dale,

Hi Dale,

I will do that for sure, provided you can provide tips on where REAL cajun food can be found, not that tourist stuff.. :)

I'll give you a buzz when I get to your neck of the bayou.

Cheers,

Rick

Southern Tier, first time across the country

Hi to all who are interested in this route. I'm also planning to ride the Southern Tier possibly as early as mid-February or first of March. I wouldn't mind some companions especially since I'm female and 61. I'm doing lots of planning since I might be riding alone but prefer camping wherever I am at the end of the day. And a Warmshowers or some kind of lodging situation would also be great from time to time. I love music and hope to make stops for it and extra hiking or sightseeing too. I'd love to keep in touch and listen in on your plans and perhaps join you if it works out.

Hello Tomoko,

Hello Tomoko,

My initial plan was to leave Feb. 15, but I forgot that the 14th is Valentines day, and the logistics of staying in San Diego prior to starting the tour, got to be VERY expensive, so I have moved my planed start date to February 19th 2018.

If this time frame fits in with your plans, I'd be more than happy to have you along on the ride, and if not, perhaps we'll meet somewhere along the route.

Cheers,
Rick

Thanks for the reply

Hi Rick, Thanks for the kind invitation to ride together. I'm very interested in going with you all so let's keep in touch. Feb. 19 sounds good. I live in Eugene, Oregon and would be coming by Amtrak and I wouldn't mind a day to get organized and settled and rested in case of sleeplessness on the train. My usual M.O. is to train on the road so I may start a little slowly and the first day or two is the big hill. I've compared it with other rides I've done and it will be slow. We should talk before getting to far into committing to go together.  Please read my WS profile and I'll read yours. I liked your description of the trip. And when would you like to arrive in St. Augustine? I know you have a long ride back where weather will be more of an issue.
