Osmand

Hello,

Another good choice for Android phones is OsmAnd. The maps are split by French regions (Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Provence-Côte d'Azur, etc.) each one taking roughly between 100 and 200 MB. The quality of the maps ahould be similar to Oruxmaps as both are based on OpenStreetMap data.

OsmAnd track logging

Sure it does. Normally this should be active by default. You can check and modify this in the "logging services" section of the settings. Be aware that most settings are profile specific. Best ist to activate logging for all profiles, car, cycle and pedestrian. You then find the GPX tracks in the osmand/tracks folder on your phone. You should set the location of the storage directory to the external memory card if you have one. This is particularly important for map storage.

If you put a GPX track you created or you downloaded from somewhere to the tracks directory, then you can display it as an overlay on the map. To do this use the "Menu / Map layers / GPX track" function. Once you did this you can use this track for navigation. Just go to "Menu / Directions" and Osmand will ask you if you want to use the track for navigation.

Regards
Rainer

I am loving maps.me, working

I am loving maps.me, working very well in Morocco. It even got me round the medina in Chefchaouen and at that zoom level showed hostels and cafes. It works well offline, just got me right into Fez with no data credit left.

You have to download the whole country but can choose not to have routing which saves space. You can also store it on a memory card in an Android phone.

I've used many maps apps in

I've used many maps apps in the last eight months including those suggested above.

Maps.me is the best, hands down.

You download vector maps of the entire country which takes very little space compared to other apps which ask you to choose the area of the map and download many layers which is time consuming and takes lots of space.

The only negative point is that it has no relief map so you cannot tell how hilly the terrain will be. For this I also use oruxmaps and check relief when I have WiFi but use maps.me to navigate.

Also, many other cyclists and hitchhikers I have met have been using maps.me exclusively once they found out about it and many travellers on the road have told me to get it even before I told them I already use it.

I had a look at maps.me based

I had a look at maps.me based on all the recommendations but I still prefer osmand (more detail, many more features) but I'm just posting because I saw this today:
-Official Google Blog: Navigate and search the real world … online or off
https://googleblog.blogspot.com.ar/2015/11/navigate-and-search-real-world-online.html

Google maps will be releasing a functional offline version for Android (not sure of the release date) - with addresses, full map data (except for reviews, photos and satellite view) and navigation.

It looks like the largest map

It looks like the largest map area that can be downloaded at any one time is 120,000 sq km, so offline Google maps are probably not ideal for the touring cyclist.
